Although the 2018 Mazda CX-5 isn’t a large SUV, it offers plenty of space for passengers. The interior is nicely designed and without an abundance of hard plastics. Standard features on the Sport trim include a four-speaker sound system, Bluetooth, two USB ports, and a 40/20/40-split rear seat with fold and recline. A leather-wrapped steering wheel is also standard. For those who choose the uplevel Touring trim, a multitude of goodies are added to the list. Heated front seats, simulated leather upholstery, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, and dual-zone automatic climate control set the Touring trim apart from the Sport. The 2018 Mazda CX-5 Touring trim is also eligible for the Preferred package that includes navigation and an upgraded, 10-speaker stereo system.
Every 2018 Mazda CX-5 is equipped with front and front-side airbags, side-curtain bags for the rear seating area, and stability and traction control. The Sport version also comes with low-speed frontal collision warning with automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. The Touring trim also comes with these features but also adds on improved safety features. This includes automatic high-beams, lane departure warning, lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, and an upgrade to the frontal collision warning system. The safety suite can be added on to the Sport trim for an additional cost. Both trims scored high in the IIHS safety tests for 2018.
The 2018 Mazda CX-5 provides a comfortable ride for drivers and passengers. The Sport trim has a wide, comfortable front-passenger seat that is nicely contoured. The rear seat doesn’t slide or recline very far, but there’s still ample headroom for adults. The suspension system is more than adequate, and passengers don’t get jostled much when the vehicle travels over uneven road surfaces. The Touring trim boasts one of the most efficient dual-zone climate control systems of any small or mid-size SUV. The heated front seats on the Touring trim heat up to optimum temperature quite rapidly. Both the Sport and Touring trim feature tall windows and narrow pillars, making for excellent outward visibility.
